transitive verb
: to construct again: as
a : to establish or assemble again
b : to subject (an organ or part) to surgery to re-form its structure or correct a defect
c : to build up mentally : recreate <reconstructing a lost civilization>
The full definition of RECONSTRUCT from Merriam-Webster.
The Globe and Mail just recently posted an article about the Bill Cosby situation. You can read it here, it isn't very long. I think reading it helped drive home, for me, why I chose the word "reconstruct." It isn't quite fixing, it isn't quite a revolution, but it's a beginning. I think the Jian Ghomeshi scandal has been a deconstructive starting point, breaking down the walls around talking about sexual assault and violence against women. It's important to move forward from the angry part, and turning the outrage into change. I want to support organizations that promote education and provide support for the people who need it so that we can start re-assembling the way we talk about scandals like this.
Maybe in 20 years Rush Limbaugh will just shush. Maybe in less than that. Maybe by tomorrow, someone will stop defending people like Bill Cosby and Jian Ghomeshi.
The goal is to raise $2500 for organizations that support survivors of sexual assault. There are some links here to organizations that take monetary donations. If you do make a donation, tweet me @closelyreadjg and let me know how much so I can add it to the tally. Or, leave a comment on this post. OR, leave a note in the comment form.
