THE GOAL: RAISE $2500 FOR ORGANIZATIONS THAT SUPPORT SURVIVORS OF SEXUAL ASSAULT, HAVE 50 PEOPLE PLEDGE TO VOLUNTEER FOR A GROUP NEAR THEM.
What is this project?
This project is a response to the noise around the Jian Ghomeshi "scandal." Ghomeshi was a prominent host for the CBC who, on October 26, 2014, made a (long) Facebook post about why he had been fired from the broadcaster. At least eight women have accused him of violent acts against them, acts he calls a part of his "private life" which includes practicing BDSM in the bedroom. What has ensued since the end of October is a lot of speaking out and backtracking from various figures on social media, and utter outrage on the parts of many--including myself.
This project is a response to this. The allegations against Ghomeshi go as far back as 2002. He attempted to silence the victims of his assaults through a manicured Facebook post, declaring that his being fired was the result of the machinations of a "jilted ex-girlfriend."
We cannot know everything that happened. We cannot join the Toronto Police in their investigation. We can, however, work to make sure "scandals" like this one do not break out again. We can work to build a framework of education about sex, sexual assault, and BDSM for people like Jian Ghomeshi cannot so easily frame their crimes in a 1500 word Facebook page.
The goal is to raise $2500 for organizations who support survivors of sexual assault, and 50 pledges from individuals who want to volunteer for such organizations. The best way to effect change is to support the organizations that support survivors and provide valuable education about sexual assault and supporting survivors of sexual assault. There is not a specific organization because there are groups in every community that need donations and volunteers to make a change.
Who am I?
Tweet me @closelyreadjg!
I am a post-secondary student and, although I don't identify with the word specifically, a survivor of sexual assault. This project began as a class assignment inspired by my own outrage at the Jian Ghomeshi "scandal" and the way the conversation (or lack thereof) was taking place and at the things that were being done (not being done) in response.
Why?
I wanted to structure the pseudo-fundraiser this way because I wanted to encourage people to give back to the organizations in their own community. I wanted to breed a little productivity and positivity into those communities through the people who become involved, and change the direction of conversations like those around Jian Ghomeshi--huge or small.
